Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone in ‘Lafangey Parindey’

20th August 2010 is all set to see one of the most anticipated releases of this year from Yash Raj films hit the screens. The film uniquely titled ‘Lafangey Parindey’ has been directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Aditya Chopra. The film has Neil Nitin Mukesh as Nandu and Deepika Padukone as Pinky in the lead pair. Their roles are extremely challenging and this love story with a difference is set in the gritty streets of Mumbai.

Incidentally, director Sarkar seems so pleased with the portrayals of Deepika and Neil in the film that he has already gifted them an iPad each as a token of appreciation.

My erotic and masturbation scenes are not vulgar!

My erotic and masturbation scenes are not vulgar!Neil Nitin Mukesh is the first mainstream hero to have done a scene of masturbation in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Jail.

Reliving the highly unconventional moments of on-screen realism Neil says, “Frankly if it was some other director I’d have said no. But knowing the way Madhur depicts explicit sexual scenes I said yes.

We shot the masturbation sequence with 450 other actors on the set with me. All the other inmates are asleep when I do it. Now a lot of it has been cropped off. But we still see the character doing it. There’s just a suggestion of it now.”

A portion of the sequence was voluntarily removed from the film before it was presented to the censor board.

Says Neil, “Honestly, after Madhur and I shot the masturbation sequence we found we had gone too far. It was too explicit. It was just not jelling with Indian concepts of aesthetics. So we decided to knock it off quite a bit by mutual consent. We just wondered if the flow of the narration would be hampered.”

That’s not only sexually explicit sequence Neil has participated in for Jail. “In one sequence I go in the night to the bath and see a boy performing oral sex on another. Their pleasure is interrupted by me, and the boy says, ‘You had to come and spoil the fun.’ While we agreed to remove dialogue the scene of oral sex remains.”

Neil’s colleagues say they would gladly do a nude scene for a role. Ranbir Kapoor already has in Saawariya. But auto- eroticism is going too far.

Neil explains, “My nude or masturbation scenes are not for titillation. It’s a very practical need in the script. My character is in Jail without sex for 2 and 1/2 years. What does he do? He naturally seeks pleasure by himself. In the scene that we shot my character fantasizes about his girlfriend and gets his gratification.”

Comparing the moment to the dramatic poignant and memorable sequence in Alan Parker’s 1979 prison drama Midnight Express where the young prison inmate makes his girlfriend undress from across the glass partition dividing prisoners from visitors Neil sighs, “Oh my God! That was a wonderful moment. But we couldn’t show something like this in Jail.

Even the love-making scene with Mugdha Godse has been so aesthetically shot. Like the love making scene between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. It became an out-of-the-body experience for the audience.”

Even the censors’ blocking off Neil’s frontal nudity has been taken in the right spirit by the young actor.

“At first I was upset. I realize I am the first Indian actor to show full frontal nudity. But the scene was that of humiliation, not titillation, like the naked parade in Bandit Queen.

Even though I don’t get raped physically Jail is the first Hindi film to show the hero’s emotional rape. We’ve created all the hell inside prison. Audiences will actually see the horror behind the prison walls.”

I'm dating someone in real life too: Neil

Neil Nitin Mukesh after having been away for months shooting in the US for Yash Raj banner film, New York being directed by Kabir Khan (Kabul Express) and also starring John Abraham and Katrina Kaif is back in town and raring to go!There is buzz that Neil Nitin Mukesh has signed a three-film contract with Percept Picture Company. The first film to be made under the banner is Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail. Neil is reluctant to talk about the other two projects. "Yes I am under contract and am preparing myself for the roles and leaping into it, " says Neil. However, the lead heroine opposite Neil has not yet been revealed. When asked about the romantic quotient of the film Neil says, "You have to wait and watch. I cannot say more."When asked about romance in real life he laughs and says, "That's for you to find out. Just read between the lines and you will know who she is." Right now Neil Mukesh is concentrating on his next Jail. "Jail concentrates on one Character Parag Dixit. He has a job in a corporate company where he earns fifteen to twenty thousand. He is happy with his job, his life and his girl friend. One incident changes everything completely. He is thrown behind bars. He does not know what a prison is. He does not know the politics behind it or why he is behind bars. He gets involved in riots. Then there's his perspective or vision of what a real jail is shown." "Madhur has done extensive research as usual. He has crossed all boundaries with this film. He gives himself competition and is so adamant that he has to achieve something, " informs Neil. About his own research for the role in the film, Neil says, "I am like an Eklavya. I am very focused as a human being when I have teacher like Madhur before me. I become even stronger when I work with such directors. I believe that one has to work hard and waste my time and the director's time because of lack of concentration."Being one of the seasonal newcomers in Bollywood Neil maintains that as an actor he is always dedicated to his work. "I am extremely passionate about the films I do or the whole medium of filmmaking.I started acting as a child when I was four years old. My heart and my convictions will always show through my work. I choose my work only by my directors. He is the captain of my ship. For me it is important that at such an early stage of life I need to mould my career correctly. I am particular about how interesting the character is and whether I will be able to justify it or not" he says and wraps up.
